The 4 Stages of a hairstyle

Stage 1
I'm pretty and I know it. I can't wait to see everyone! Yay! I actually look so good, my left profile is so cute.  I can't wait until I try out all the  different ways of wearing this new hair. But first, let me take a selfie. Your theme song: I got the power.

Stage 2
Three weeks in and fluffs are starting to appear. You hair isn't as fresh anymore,  compliments are coming in at a decreasing rate. Your esteem is still up there but it isn't exactly rising exponentially anymore. You don't really want to see anyone but you have mascara and lip gloss to make up for the damaged strand or four. You're making an effort to keep it together so that the style lasts and you get your money's worth. You're basing your scalp often to combat the itch and wearing pantyhose to bed every night for added protection.

Stage 3
Five weeks in and there's nothing to salvage anymore. No one cares about your hair, and you'd actually prefer nobody took a glance at your head, let alone pass an unwanted remark. You no longer care to play around with cute hairstyles, you're quite tired of it and already have a new style in mind. You're only bumping into old friends in this stage of your (no longer) new hair. You see your ex and he's looking ridiculously gorgeous- you, on the other hand...

Stage 4
You've entered the zone of total decay. There is no longer the need to pat your hair in order to eliminate the itches, you just get right in there. You flick the dandruff that fills your finger nails without a care and go on about your day. Your motto at this stage is "I have inner beauty". In this zone you've become close friends with all your beanies and berets and are very glad when it's cold because it doesn't look odd. You've set Friday night as the day you free yourself from this grief and you plan on turning a new leaf on Saturday morning, with a new hairstyle.

The problem is that this lady is telling you that box braids are R450 with YOUR hair piece and you've only got R320. Sigh. You make a plan, and get it done.

The things we do for stage 1 status.

(I'm sending this blog out sitting nice and snug in what is stage 4 on steroids)

However: I am not my hair- India Arie
